Common sense can usually tell you whether hotels will be sold out quickly or if you have some wiggle room. (Boutique hotels in New Orleans during Mardi Gras will sell out much quicker than the huge hotels on The Strip in Las Vegas during the summer.) If you can afford to, try to wait until the last minute to book your hotels when they offer the best deals on their last-minute unsold rooms.
