Why will my iPad Air 2 not update? ›

You might be unable to update your iPhone or iPad wirelessly — or over the air — for one of these reasons: Your device doesn't support the latest software. There isn't enough available storage space on your device. The update takes a long time to download.

These devices aren't made anymore, and they don't support the latest versions of iPadOS. iPad: original, 2, 3, 4.

It's bad news if your iPhone is older than the iPhone 8—Apple has ended support for the iPhone 7 and older, so you won't be able to upgrade your iPhone software to iOS 16. But even if you have a newer iPhone, you still may not get the full iOS 16 experience.

Go to Settings > General > Software Update. Tap Automatic Updates, then turn on Download iOS Updates. Turn on Install iOS Updates. Your device will automatically update to the latest version of iOS or iPadOS.

It is currently still fully supported with iPadOS 15.5. That is the most current iPadOS version available for any iPad. It should not lag or feel noticeably slower than it does right now with iPadOS 15.5. Its not a major update, so should not change much in terms of performance.

The iPad Air 2nd generation can be updated to iPadOS version 15. You do not have to do anything special. Apple automatically supports iPadOS 15 on that iPad model. The iPad Air (1st generation) can ONLY be updated up to iOS version 12.

Device Compatibility
