I’ve recently reviewed with praise the original Gucci Bloom for its creamy & heady, natural-feeling bouquet of jasmine, tuberose & honeysuckle. The fragrance seems to be a success (great! I love to see quality scents thrive), because it has been followed by many flankers – 5 until now, not counting the hair mist and complementary line… and it’s only been 3 years since the original.
Since Bloom‘s flankers are overall very similar to their pillar (even if holding their subtle nuances), I’ve decided to group my mini-reviews on them in a single article. As new versions may come, I’ll update this post with its new mini-review – unless it turns out to be super unique1. Like the original, all flankers were developed by perfumer Alberto Morillas.
Rating: 4 out of 5.
Released in 2018, Bloom Nettare di Fiori is a darker interpretation of its pillar, and features several aditional notes – of which I mostly get patchouli, musk, and a honeyed hint of osmanthus. I find it, indeed, slightly denser and warmer than the original Bloom, with a non-minty, smooth, musky patchouli in the background providing it a darker edge.
The original florals of Bloom still dominate, but Nettare di Fiori feels deeper than its predecessor. Its (translated) name, “Flower Nectar” feels spot-on to me. Between the glossy, nectary florals & patchouli (which I love), and the slightly fuzzy musk in the base (which I’m not such a fan of), I may like this just as much as the original.
Notes: rose, ginger, osmanthus, tuberose, jasmine, honeysuckle, rangoon creeper, patchouli, musk.
Colour Impression: Green-tinted Amber.
Evokes: dark & colourful floral / botanical paintings; a flowy, black floral-print dress; an elegant victorian living room redecorated in modern, warm & dark tones.
Similar to: Gucci Bloom, with a hint of Chanel Coco Noir.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
Also from 2018, Bloom Acqua di Fiori is an (intense!) Eau de Toilette, and as suggested by its packaging, it takes the original Bloom‘s green, dewy background and brings it front and centre. Lemon, freesia & lily of the valley give it an icy, watery freshness, and galbanum intensifies its foliage-evoking tones. The familiar florals are still around, but they come second after the green splash of new notes.
This is by far the most unique version of Bloom, almost a different fragrance… So, you might possibly like Bloom and dislike Acqua di Fiori, or vice-versa. I happen to like both, but they give off very distinct impressions – if I owned the original Bloom, this is the only flanker I wouldn’t find redundant to buy, as well.
Notes: Galbanum, cassis leaf, bergamot, lemon, freesia, lily of the valley, jasmine, tuberose, honeysuckle, musk, sandalwood, Iso E Super².
Colour Impression: Emerald Green.
Evokes: Monet’s garden after the rain, but painted with pop-art green tones; splashing in the pool in a fancy hotel – in the middle of a tropical jungle.
Similar to: Gucci Bloom, with a hint of Armani Acqua di Gioia.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
Since Spring 2019, we have Bloom Gocce di Fiori (“Flower Drops”), another Eau de Toilette. It smells almost identical to Bloom, but its texture is nitidly more transparent. The notes feel very natural (more like the original than the technicolour-fresh Acqua di Fiori), and the honeysuckle is slightly more prominent than in Bloom, to my nose.
The result feels less creamy and brighter than the original, from less musky & nectary tones. Yes, this takes away some complexity, but Gocce di Fiori makes up for it with its delicate, cheerful beauty. A bit simpler than the original, but a lovely addition to the Bloom line!
Notes: jasmine, tuberose, honeysuckle.
Colour Impression: Translucid Ivory.
Evokes: a breeze over a fresh, sunny garden filled with honeysuckles.
Similar to: Gucci Bloom, but translucid – like its frosted bottle!
Rating: 2.5 out of 5.
In Autumn 2019, came Bloom Ambrosia di Fiori. From the autumnal cozy vibes and inclusion of two of my favourites notes (rose & orris) I was especially looking forward to try this flanker. Oh, well… ironically, Ambrosia di Fiori turns out to be my least favourite Bloom³.
Where Nettare di Fiori smells dark in a good way (deep and round), Ambrosia smells dark… in a bad way. Behind Bloom‘s already weighty florals, adding in powdery-dusty orris was perhaps just too much. This feels heavy and opaque – and there isn’t much greeness to balance it out. My nose can’t help but “get” here a bouquet past its prime, too over-ripe and somewhat stale. Maybe you’ll have a different impression, but I’m afraid this one is a pass, for me.
Notes: jasmine, honeysuckle, tuberose, rose, orris.
Colour Impression: Dusty Beige & Aubergine.
Evokes: a bouquet of over-ripe flowers sitting in a dark wooden table.
Similar to: Gucci Bloom, but slightly gloomy (sorry to the fans! I wish I liked this one…).
Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
Last but not least, Bloom Profumo di Fiori has just been released, in late summer 2020. I’m apparently the only person who finds this bottle really ugly4, but this wouldn’t annoy me much… if this didn’t happen to be my favourite fragrance in the Bloom line so far!
Like its siblings, Profumo di Fiori is about 80% similar to Bloom. The remaining 20% here consists of velvety ylang-ylang, sandalwood & benzoin (there’s also orris, but it’s subtle… it works). Profumo di Fiori manages to make Bloom‘s florals feel even rounder, smoother and plushier – but not opaque. A warm, cozy take on Bloom, this would probably be my choice if I were to pick one in the line for myself!
Notes: jasmine, honeysuckle, tuberose, ylang ylang, sandalwood, solar notes, orris, benzoin, musk, woody notes.
Colour Impression: Warm Butter Yellow.
Evokes: A huge bouquet of yellow & white flowers; a relaxing soirée in a manor’s jasmine-filled sunroom.
Similar to: Gucci Bloom, with a hint of Bvlgari Goldea.
I think “recognizable yet unique” is what variations of a fragrance should ideally go for, but this perfect balance is hard to find5. In the wider spectre between “this is another scent altogether” and “this is just the same thing in another bottle”, Bloom flankers definitely sit near the second extreme.
Their advantage is: the original Bloom is a beautiful scent; so its near-identical offspring is pretty much bound to also smell very good.
These flankers do explore different sides of the original’s accords, which is a great idea, and they’re (mostly) successful in their concepts. I only wish they each had a more defined character, as (except for Acqua di Fiori) they vary so subtly I find difficult to appreciate their differences – even side-by-side!
I can’t really see many people feeling tempted to own all the versions of Bloom, apart for huge fans of the fragrance or collectors… But, if you almost love Bloom, the wide array of its slightly different takes might be a great chance for you to find your perfect version of it.
So, good job, Gucci. Keep them coming! (maybe just more boldly next time!)
¹ Which, by the walk of the collection so far, I frankly doubt.
² A synthetic note with warm and dry woody nuances.
³ Although, I’m sure that will change when they release Bloom L’Intensement Intense Absolu.
4 Not a fan of the mustard yellow, meh… If only the tag were beige to break it up a bit…
5 The Chanel Nº5 and Nº19, and Narciso Rodriguez Narciso lines are fine examples!
