Airport Abbreviations. International Codes, Identifiers (2023)

When travelling we pay attention to the international airport abbreviations on the flight tickets and boarding passes. Same abbreviations or codes are used on the luggage invoices and in the airports on flight schedule screens.

In most cases there is nothing complicated to understand the international airport abbreviations and codes but sometimes it is not clear from the first sight.

The most clear approach is when the name of the airport was used to create IATA (International Air Transport Association) code, for example:

This is the case, when the first three letters were used for the international airport codes. What happens if this airport identifier is already given to another location?

Then passengers see the code, which is clear or easy to guess. For example, the city of Hong Kong has the airport code of HKG – several letters are simply taken away.

The number of airports around the globe is growing and sometimes it is not easy to find exact match for the three letters code to create clear airport abbreviations. That’s why Los Angeles is marked LAX, Portland is PDX. Where did the letter X come from?

Earlier, when the number of airports was not so numerous, the airports were called according to the closest meteo station. Los Angeles had a simple abbreviation of LA. With the rapid growth of travel and transportation industry two letters for the airport abbreviations turned out to be not enough. That’s why in some cases letter X was added to the airport code, like in case with Los Angeles, which is LAX now.

If there are two or more airports in the same city to create airport abbreviations, IATA code would consist of the first letter of the city and the other two of the airport name. In London the International Heathrow airport is LHR, Gatwick – LGW, London city airport – LCY.

But still there may be some exceptions for the international airport abbreviations and codes. For example, in Kiev (Kyiv) city there are two airports: in Borispol and Zhulyany, which are marked with KBP and IEV codes. The last one doesn’t fall under the rule we have described above. The reason for this exception is that Zhulyany airport used to serve only local flights, and is geographically local in the city. In a while when budget air companies came to Ukraine the airport began to serve international flights as well and got IEV IATA abbreviation.

Some of the international airport abbreviations are assigned to the airports, which have the historical background explaining why IATA abbreviation differs from the name of the city and the airport. One of the examples is O’Hare International Airport of Chicago – ORD. The airport was located close to Orchard Place farm, later called Orchard Field Airport. This is where the abbreviation of ORD is derived from. Later the airport changed its name but the airport abbreviation remained the same.

For the flights in Canada most of the airports start with Y. In early days when transport industry started to develop the letter Y was used in all the codes of radio communications. The letter Y is still used in the codes of Canadian airports: YYZ – Ontario, YQB- Quebec City Jean Lesage International airport.

In the world the universal three letter code is accepted as airport identifier. Such code is unique and it is defined by IATA – the International Air Transport Association. The three-letter airport code is easy to use during the flights, for the pilots, travel companies, frequent travelers. IATA three-letter airport code is also used the electronic flight systems. Three-letter airport codes also used on the baggage tags in the airports.

There are four-character airport codes established by ICAO – the International Civil Aviation Organization. The four-character airport codes are used by air traffic for planning flights and airlines activity. ICAO codes are used for the reservations and baggage.

The main types of airport codes are: IATA (International Air Transport Association) and ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization). IATA codes are 3 letter codes (abbreviations) used to refer to main commercial airports worldwide.

Not all airports have been assigned 3 letter IATA codes. The ICAO codes generally have a regional structure and provide geographical context.

The airports have 3 letter codes to ensure unique entity, which is not used elsewhere. If the 3 letters are already taken the airport codes are assigned based on the name of the airport, city, or other meaningful and relevant identifier.

The only common abbreviation for airport is Airpt. The plural abbreviations for the airports is Airpts. Example: Arrival: airpt. 6:20am

(Video) WHAT IS AN IATA AIRPORT CODE?

YUM

These are brief notes about international airport abbreviations you find when booking flights or in your airline flight registrations. We hope you find the information on the International Airport Abbreviations helpful, and planning your next trip will be much easier now.

FAQs

What is a ICAO identifier? ›

ICAO code consists of 4 letters. Certain classifications among countries and regions are used in creating these codes. The first letter stands for the region in which the airport is located, the second is for the country. The other two letters are generally given in order.

How are ICAO identifiers different from IATA? ›

In general IATA codes are usually derived from the name of the airport or the city it serves, while ICAO codes are distributed by region and country. Far more aerodromes (in the broad sense) have ICAO codes than IATA codes, which are sometimes assigned to railway stations as well.

What do the letters in airport codes mean? ›

Those codes are actually four letters long: The first letter describes the country, and the remaining three letters mark the specific airport. For instance, Florida's Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport would be KFLL; the “K” is for U.S. and “FLL” is the specific airport code.

What is the abbreviation for International airport? ›

IATA stands for International AirporT Abbreviation. How to memorize things, Iata, Pilot quotes.

Why do airport identifiers start with K? ›

K – United States

The prefix K is generally reserved for the contiguous United States. The ICAO codes for these airports are usually the FAA location identifier prefixed with a K. IATA codes are listed where applicable.

What is the 3 digit airport code? ›

The International Air Transport Association's (IATA) Location Identifier is a unique 3-letter code (also commonly known as IATA code) used in aviation and also in logistics to identify an airport. For example, JFK is the IATA code for, you might know it, New York's John F.
